Chapter 13

Gordy watched as Truddie Mae took Niles’s free hand and squished up close to him as two camphor tree leaves drifted from the nature mage’s open palm and took flight on trails on green illuminated magic. Twirling around them both, the room lit up with dazzling color as the curtains swayed in the created current of his travel power. In a blur of Nile’s gusty manifestation, they were gone.

The curtains returned to normal, the air within the living room stabilized. Leesa pumped his hand twice and let it go before running a hand through her hair brushing it from her face. He sighed watching the last remnants of Niles’s nature magic fade away as she rubbed his back. The house now rose quietly around them, both of them locked in and sharing the silence of a prison built for two.

“Now that they’re gone, time to get some work done,” he said leaving her side and moving to the stairs. “Don’t want to waste the time we’ve been given.”

“Where are you going?” Leesa asked.

“Where do you think?” he responded. “Silly goose, I’m going to the attic. I’m not sitting here all day and night in this empty house doing nothing. As if that was even a consideration.”

“You literally heard Truddie Mae, seconds ago I might add, tell you not to do any alchemy or use magic. She and Niles expect us to not get into trouble.”

“What they don’t know won’t hurt them.” He paused and winked at her as he stood on the stairs.

“It’s not them getting hurt I’m worried about.”

“Where’s your sense of adventure?”

“I left it in my other purse, you know, in Utah...”

He rolled his eyes. “Toodles,” he said giving her a shrug and a half-wave before turning.

“You’re not leaving me down here all alone, I’m going with you.” She hurried to the foot of the stairs. “I can keep you company, or vice versa.” Moving up the steps, she pushed against his back with her hands. “What kind of friend would I be if I didn’t stir the pot with you,” she said giving him a nudge to the back before giggling.

“Cue the mischief,” he said sharing a laugh with her. “Time to break the rules and fight the establishment like the heathens we’ve always been.”

“Just remember, I was against this,” she cautioned.

“Sure, sure, but I’m still blaming you if we get busted. I’ll throw you under the bus to save myself. Your little doe-eyed look will only get you so far compared to my chubby innocence.” He slapped his belly causing her to chuckle as they hurried to the attic.

She stood by the ladder leading down as he made his way to the large alchemy workstation that took up much of the right side of the open attic. Concentrating, he arranged items at the station and began to look through the various bottles at his disposal. Flipping on the small hot plate and placed a saucepan on top, he looked over at her wondering why she was still standing in place.
